What’s it Like to Play the WSOP?

Play the WSOPAsk an amateur poker player anywhere in the world what his ultimate goal is when playing poker, and quite often the reply will be the desire to play in the World Series of Poker. Playing in this prestigious series staged each summer in Las Vegas is a lofty goal, but do those who dream of poker glory have any clue what it’s actually like to play in a WSOP tournament?

We’ve listed below some points to consider as you prepare for your Vegas trip (whether the preparations are real or still at the wishful thinking stage).

Events for everyone = The 2012 World Series of Poker consisted of 61 events, in poker variations ranging from Seven Card Stud Hi-Low 8 or Better to H.O.R.S.E. Buy-ins ranged from the $500 Casino Employees No-Limit Hold’em Championship to the $1,000,000 buy-in Big One for One Drop charity event. In addition to the $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em World Championship, there were ample opportunities to win a coveted WSOP bracelet. Playing a WSOP tournament is an exciting experience, no matter what event it is.

Poker celebrities = If you follow the news from the poker world, you’re probably familiar with many of the players who owe their celebrity to huge tournament wins. Once you sit down to play the WSOP, you’ll find many of these famous poker celebrities seated at your table. You’ll find yourself competing against the best players in the world, from Doyle Brunson to Daniel Negreanu. Fame doesn’t win poker tournaments, so you have just as much chance of winning the tournaments as do your poker idols. In the end you’ll realize that your famous opponents are ordinary people just like you.

Live compared to online = Many players win their WSOP seats at online poker rooms such as Titanbet Poker, and for them, participating in a live tournament in Vegas is a first time experience. If you’re a first timer, you’ll quickly realize that live poker is played at a much slower pace than online poker. Be prepared for long stretches of waiting around for other players to make their moves. Playing poker for an entire day can be exhausting, so you should come prepared (many players bring along their iPods so that they have music to ease the boredom).

Everything is huge = Television broadcasts of poker tournaments cannot begin to portray the immenseness of what happens at the World Series of Poker. The tournament halls are huge, with thousands of players clicking their chips simultaneously in hypnotic rhythm. Frequently there is more than one bracelet event taking place in the same hall. During breaks between the levels, the lobbies are crowded and there are long lines to the bathrooms. In short, nothing you’ve ever experienced before will adequately prepare you for how big the WSOP actually is.

15 minutes of fame = Let’s be very optimistic and say that you’ll manage to beat out thousands of starters in your event and finish in the money. Okay, you fell short of a WSOP bracelet, but still, you won money at a WSOP tournament! That’s quite an achievement, but let’s not get carried away. Even with a check in hand, you’re one of hundreds of players who will have won money. By the time you cash your check, the next WSOP tournament is already well under way. You’ll have your moment in the sun, but it will be a short one. Unless you happen to win the WSOP Main Event and secure your place in poker history…

Bust, and you’re out = A more likely outcome for your WSOP play is the possibility that you will bust out of the action long before the bubble. In fact for many players, just surviving the starting day of a WSOP tournament is an accomplishment in itself. When you get up from the table, remember to shake the hands of your opponents, as poker is a very civil sport. Don’t be upset; after all, you played in the World Series of Poker!

Plenty of poker action = If you came to Las Vegas with the intention of playing poker, then your dreams will come true the moment you’ve been eliminated from the WSOP. You’ll find that not only is there plenty of side action taking place in the very same hall where the tournament is being staged, but that there are additional poker tournaments being staged across town in some of the other glitzy casinos. Many players come to Vegas for the WSOP but end up seeing more action at the cash tables than at the tournament tables.

For many, playing in the World Series of Poker will remain a dream, but you can make it become a reality. Every year, Titanbet Poker hosts a satellite series awarding winning players with a winner’s package that includes a seat at a WSOP tournament, hotel accommodations, and airfare. Don’t let the WSOP remain a dream. Play at Titanbet Poker and make playing in the WSOP a reality.
